This project focuses on people that are at risk from, or live with dementia, and we will use manicuring as a means of social therapy. This will be delivered by students from the local college and they will help engage people in conversation and give them the pampering and care they deserve. We will also show popular old films and musicals which may help in triggering the feelings they felt when they watched it for first time. We will serve tea and coffee throughout the day and help people engage in conversation, which may spark new friendships, ultimately giving those that attend, the caring feelings we all crave as people. Touch, warmth, communication, understanding, and overall; friendship, will be the key to making this project as magical as it sounds. The application, should we be successful, will provide the Arch-Way Project with £40500 to continue its Past Times project for a further year and grow it into another day a week. The project provides entertainment for elderly people in Calderdale who are at risk of dementia. It’s main aim it to provide social events, reducing the feelings of loneliness and isolation that many people, especially those that are elderly, feel. We do this by recreating a 1950’s style night club in our space where we have live musicians performing songs from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. We have a quiz and games of bingo. We provide refreshments and there is a bar where people can buy something a little stronger if they choose to. Currently we have around 100 people attending from all around Calderdale and this number is steadily growing. At our last Christmas party over 130 people came. All of the above, which we describe as ‘a night out on a Monday afternoon’ happens every Monday (except Bank Holidays) at Arden Road Social Club from 1:30pm until 4pm and is free, all are welcome. Should we achieve the funding we will expand the project on to a second day (Wednesday). It will not be a replication of what we do on Monday’s but will compliment it. We will open our doors at 10am and provide Manicures, head, neck and shoulder massage and hair cuts for the gentlemen. This will be followed by a pie and pea lunch (with a vegetarian option) at a small charge of £2.00. After lunch we will show a classic musical from the 50’s or 60’s. We have a large screen onto which we can project these films and a great sound system. The project is all about bringing people together, reducing the feeling of being alone but it also benefits those already living with a dementia; we recreate the past in order to bring people into the present.
